“Man, is by nature, a political animal.” - Aristotle Greetings from ABEC! How great it is to get a break from the intense hot air that has permeated Arizona for the past 3 months. I am referring to another Arizona summer, of course, and not the legislative session. I’ve heard from several participants in and observers of the session who have said they just can’t believe it’s so political. While there is no room for politics in education, even education can’t escape politics. Politics is defined as the art or science of political government; political methods or maneuvers; political principles or opinions; (playing politics) engaging in political intrigue, taking advantage of a political situation or issue, exploiting a political system or relationships; dealing with people in an opportunistic, manipulative or devious way. We are all politicians. As Carolyn Warner states in her book The Last Word, “…Politics means being a part of the world around you.” The politics of education exist from the classroom to the board room. In a public education system every member of that system has a life experience and a right to express an opinion – especially about schooling. The issues in education are complex, intangible and long term. They touch the two things most important to most people: their money and their children. We can close the door to the conflict of politics and let others determine the outcome, or we can accept the politics and learn how to work with them for a better outcome for the common good. For ABEC and its members, we must roll up our sleeves, recognize and work with the politics of education. We must educate each other. We must take the time to understand all sides of the issues, reveal our own assumptions, empathize with others, and seek to find the common ground. Only then can we collaborate, advocate and influence. Best Always, Susan Carlson

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Both local and national media have covered the recently filed lawsuits that seek equitable funding solutions for Arizona’s public schools. ABEC invited the Arizona Charter Schools Association who has helped spearhead this effort (and a member of ABEC) to comment on the lawsuits … “in their own words”:
What do you think? Send us an e-mail and share your opinion with ABEC.
"SHADOW THE SUPER"
Throughout this fall, ABEC is facilitating an opportunity for legislators to spend time with a school superintendent in their legislative district. This is the legislators' opportunity to hear and see first-hand the issues from the practitioner; superintendents have the opportunity to share how the issues play out in their districts. To accommodate demanding schedules, the day is "your choice!" To get connected with a legislator or a superintendent, contact Karen at karen@azbec.org or 602-261-6702 TODAY! ABEC 2ND ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 2nd Annual ABEC Golf Tournament is Saturday, November 14th at the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass and we need our ABEC family and friends’ support. Our goals are to encourage business and education members and their friends to socialize and build relationships and to raise additional funds through sponsorship opportunities. Please:
- Consider how you or your organization can contribute. Not a golfer… ... Can you contribute a raffle item? ... Can you get a foursome from your organization to play? ... Can you sponsor a tee box or a foursome? - Share the information with your friends, contacts and neighbors that may be interested in sponsoring and/or playing in this event. - Become a sponsor and bring your own foursome. - Bring a twosome of educators and be paired with a twosome from a business. Educators: bring your business friends, vendors or legislator; business folks: bring your favorite educators. - Bring a prospective member and encourage membership in ABEC. - Promote our tournament via your organization’s newsletter and website. We are also seeking Title Sponsors. As little as a $3,000 donation would ensure the success of this event. Our target: 60 players – We need YOU to help us get to that 60 and hopefully more! Take action NOW. Send us your commitment ASAP. More information> | |
